Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
